A career development event for cadets from Yorkshire, the Humber and the North East who are aged 15+ will return to York St John University’s York campus on 5-6 July 2025. Cadets will have the opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship and running a business. Subjects to be covered include accounting and finance, company law and marketing. There will also be a Dragon’s Den style business planning competition, complete with prizes to the winners, that will enable the cadets to put lessons into practice. The prize-giving reception on the Sunday will host VIPs and industry representatives.
Tangible benefits
The tangible benefits of acquiring transferable workplace skills to both the employee and employer are well known, especially for young people who are yet to enter employment.
The event organiser, Simon Banks-Cooper, Honorary Colonel, Humberside and South Yorkshire Army Cadet Force says, “The 2024 event was extremely successful and enjoyed by cadets and CFAV alike. This event presents a fabulous opportunity for cadets to apply aspects of their cadet experience and gain an understanding of relevance of their cadet experience, in a business and entrepreneurial context. The studies will be relevant to any cadet who has ambitions for either starting their own business or seeking a leadership role in a business environment in due course.”

Be work-ready
Cadets will already have an understanding of the importance of good planning, clear communication and leadership within the context of their cadet experience. This event will enable them to understand how those skills can be applied in a business environment. The course will be delivered by academic staff and industry practitioners from within the Business School and provide cadets with an opportunity to learn about university life from the university ambassadors who will available throughout the weekend.
The host, York St John University, is a Gold Award holder within the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) and delivers Military Human Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme which was developed by Nick Wood (Armed Forces and Uniformed Services Manager) and Mick Fleming (Armed Forces and Uniformed Services Officer), a programme that is taught throughout the UK.
Expressions of interest
Sign-up for this weekend event will go live early spring. Cadets interested in reserving a space to attend should notify their unit leader.
The event is open to all sea cadets, army cadets, air cadets and CCF cadets aged 15+ in Yorkshire and the Humber and those in the HQ North East geographical area.
Every participant who takes part in and passes the pitch presentation will be eligible for a one grade discount on standard offers for undergraduate courses at York Business school.
