More state schools pupils across Yorkshire and the Humber could soon benefit from skills that can set them up for life under Government plans to expand cadet units in schools.
Some 28 schools across the region have Combined Cadet Force units – 19 of which are state schools like Sirius Academy in Hull and Horsforth School in Leeds.
This means more than 1,300 young people already have access to the opportunities and activities that are part and parcel of the cadet experience through their school.
A further 4,000 young people are cadets via community units run by the Sea Cadets, Army Cadet Force and RAF Air Cadets.
Opening up opportunities
“After a year of lockdowns and restrictions, there has never been a more crucial time to be opening up as many opportunities as we can to our young people and the cadets is a brilliant way of doing that,” said Yorkshire and the Humber’s schools cadet expansion officer Gerard Hardy.
“We’ve yet to see what the Government plans will mean for our region specifically. But this announcement is a big thumbs up for state schools setting up Combined Cadet Forces for their pupils and we are committed to giving all that want to the support they need.”
